Origins and Design

Finland's national flag, known as the Blue Cross Flag (Siniristilippu), was adopted in 1918. It features a white field with a blue cross extending to the edges of the flag. The Nordic cross design is common among Scandinavian countries and symbolizes Christianity.

Symbolism and Colors

The white background represents the country's snowy winters, while the blue cross evokes the nation's numerous lakes. A poet in 1870 described these colors as "the blue of our lakes and the white snow of our winters."

Governmental Use

When flown by the Finnish government, the flag incorporates a red, white, and yellow coat of arms. The coat of arms features a golden lion on a red background, representing Finland's historical connection to Sweden. The yellow symbolizes the country's forests and agriculture.
